About Us
The Human Performance Unit is part of
the Centre for Sports and Exercise Science at the
University of Essex. The Sports Science Undergraduate
Degree at Essex is consistently rated in the top 5 of
all sports science degrees in the UK and is accompanied
by postgraduate courses and numerous research students.
The Human Performance Unit has looked after the needs of
athletes for over ten years and worked with sportsmen
and women from recreational to elite level with examples
including Olympic divers, full time skiers, a Paralympic
swimming gold medallist, professional squash players,
elite boxers and numerous endurance athletes to name
just a few.
The HPU has grown to become one of the biggest units of
its kind and now employs 8 members of staff in addition
to accessing academic staff working in the universities
sports science department, many of whom are leaders in
their field at the cutting edge of research. Our labs
and facilities are the best in the region and among the
best in the country.
Being from a science background means we never
compromise on quality and always ensure testing and
exercise prescription is provided to the highest
standards. However we still understand the needs of
athletes and as athletes ourselves can transfer the
academic knowledge into ‘real world’ results, helping
you to achieve peak performance.
